13th Jun 2005 – Foremans Awarded Contract by National Air Traffic Services
Foremans Relocatable Building Systems, the UK’s largest supplier of pre-owned modular buildings, has been awarded the contract to remove and relocate multi-storey modular office accommodation previously used by National Air Traffic Services at Swanick.
The 68-unit, steel-framed modular building spanning over 2,400 sqm has provided temporary office accommodation for 120 staff working in financial operations at Swanick for the last 15 months while construction of a permanent office facility was carried out.
The contract, which will be completed in less than a month, includes the removal of floor coverings, light fittings and suspended ceilings, decommissioning air conditioning units, electrics and plumbing, and craning onto lorries for transportation away from the site.
Commenting on the contract, John Wallace, Group Property Manager at National Air Traffic Services Swanick said, “We have been impressed with the plans for such a huge logistical operation as this. Foremans offered a swift, practical and efficient solution to this major challenge and has taken responsibility for a whole range of tasks including evaluation of the building, scheduling the programme of works for removal and implementing the programme.”
“The need to limit disruption and find a cost-effective solution were key drivers in the decision to appoint Foremans to dismantle and relocate the building, as opposed to employing the services of a demolition contractor.”
“The sheer scale of this two-storey building would have had massive landfill implications”, explained David Johnson, Managing Director of Foremans. “We are able to deliver a more sustainable approach to the removal of modular buildings, involving the refurbishment of the scheme before relocating it to one or more different sites. This innovative method of recycling buildings minimises wastage and allows other organisations to benefit from the speed, quality and safety of off-site construction.”
He added, “We are keen to talk to other organisations that have modular buildings, which are surplus to requirements, and will work with them to undertake dismantling and removal operations with the minimum disruption.”
The modular building at Swanick will be refurbished off-site at Foremans’ production centre and re-used for either temporary or permanent facilities. Possible applications include offices, airports, hospitals, schools and universities.
