14th Dec 2009 – Highly Sustainable Building Solution for Eggborough Power Station

Outage Control Centre at Eggborough Power StationA recycled modular building has been selected by Eggborough Power Station to provide a new Outage Control Centre.

The purpose-designed facility was supplied by Foremans Relocatable Building Systems in just 10 weeks from receipt of order to handover, ready for the start of the power station’s intensive maintenance season.

The centre near Goole comprises eight fully refurbished pre-owned building modules, and provides a range of facilities, including a fully equipped first aid room, offices and meeting rooms, shower and changing areas, reception and industrial kitchen.

The control centre is used to manage the station’s outage activities and provides the project office for co-ordinating all safety requirements in connection with these major maintenance projects. It has also been designed for future expansion, to meet the power station’s changing needs.

Open plan offices at Eggborough Power StationCommenting on the project, Tony Murphy, Outage Manager at Eggborough Power said, “The recycling and refurbishment of modular buildings is a faster and more cost-effective solution for us than new build or new manufacture. It was also a much more practical alternative to have this permanent facility, rather than bring in temporary accommodation every season.”

“The speed of delivery was critical for the project, in order to have the new control centre up and running before the start of our intensive maintenance season. Foremans had previously delivered successfully on this site, which gave us further confidence that the new facility would be completed on time.”

“The building has worked well for this season’s outage projects, providing a focal point for all outage-related activities. The layout is good and it will be able to accommodate future changes of use. The new kitchen facility proved to be a huge success providing hot take-away meals for the hundreds of staff working on the outage programme.”

The project follows Foremans’ earlier completion of a security centre on the Eggborough site. This facility, also constructed from pre-owned building modules, accommodates the CCTV monitoring room, offices, toilets and shower room, and a mess room.

The use of recycled modular buildings is one of the most environmentally sound methods of construction. It generates less than 10 per cent of the carbon emissions and uses less than 3 per cent of the energy during construction, compared to a newly manufactured building of equivalent size (source: MPBA/Arup).

The approach is also highly thermally efficient. In England, tests for air permeability on pre-owned modular buildings are not compulsory. However, in independent tests, Foremans recycled modular buildings have performed up to 80 per cent better than Building Regulations requirements. This means reduced energy consumption, and lower running costs and carbon emissions.
