Leeds City Council had a need for new classroom accommodation at Parklands Girls High School, which would be used for the next 10 years until a complete new school is constructed.
Solution :Foremans provided a range of new facilities in two phases, including art and technology rooms, food science laboratory, IT suite and a quiet room, in a new single storey building.
The second phase, which is linked to the existing school, created a replacement air conditioned learning resources centre and a drama room.
Foremans were responsible for the supply of the building modules, foundations, services, access and fitting out. Alterations were also carried out to further improve the main school, which have included a new entrance to the science building, wider link corridors for more efficient circulation and the expansion of some of the classrooms. Sun pipes were used to maximise natural daylight internally.
The modules were craned into position complete with internal partitions and doors, glazing and partial installation of electrics and other services to minimise disruption on site.
The modular approach proved its cost effectiveness, as both contracts for Leeds City Council were won in competitive tender.
“We are absolutely delighted with our new building and with the rapid progress of the second phase, which is now on site. Both contracts were delivered on time and on budget, and the quality is superb. Speed and efficiency of construction were very important so as not to disrupt the running of the school, particularly as ours is such a constrained site.”
“Foremans approach enabled us to benefit from a considerably bigger building and a higher specification. We felt it was the most cost-effective and efficient way of replacing the technology building and the learning centre. This has definitely been the case and it was fantastic to work with such a professional team, from the initial planning stages through to handover. Our students have never experienced facilities like these and parents have been amazed at just what was achieved in such a short space of time.”
