New Education Facilities for St Francis Xavier College
The Requirement
Liverpool City Council required a two-storey education centre for St Francis Xavier College, to allow the college to operate from one rather than two sites.
The Solution
Foremans has worked with the Education Directorate at Liverpool City Council for several years and has been able to solve a number of their accommodation requirements across the city.
The modules used at St Francis Xavier were originally supplied by Foremans for a Liverpool primary school and when that need ended, the Council saw the potential and asked them to refurbish and redesign the internal layout for use at the college. This underlines the versatility of the modular system and its value in providing highly flexible accommodation solutions.
Foremans supplied a range of new facilities for the school, including five fully fitted science laboratories and preparation rooms, a suite of music rooms, ancillary rooms and a base for the special needs department, totalling 1,440sqm of floor space.
The laboratories will be used primarily by the sixth form, whilst the music rooms will provide vital practice accommodation for the school’s music enthusiasts and award-winning choir.
St Francis Xavier is one of the oldest schools in the country and is extremely highly regarded. It has a well-known neighbour as it lies next to the “Strawberry Fields” of Beatles fame.
Comments from the Client
Alison Comerford, Capital Programme Manager, Liverpool City Council:
“We are absolutely thrilled with the new centre. It’s ideal and I know the school is delighted with it too. Originally the modules were used as temporary classrooms at one of our primary schools which worked very well.”
“A new school has now been built but rather than return the modules, they have been totally transformed into the college’s music and science centre. The project has run efficiently and I would certainly recommend that other authorities look at this system”.
Brother Francis, Head Teacher, St Francis Xavier College:
“This is the first time the school has used a modular system and we are certainly pleased with it. With the steel structure, the building is strong, as well as aesthetically pleasing. In addition it means we can now operate from one site which is a major benefit.”
